Back To Greenwich Mean Time
Oct. 30th, 2022 09:12 amI hadn't been paying attention so it came as a surprise to me that we were turning the clocks back this weekend. I'm not going to make drama by pretending this dicking about with time annoys me because it doesn't; not really: I take it in my stride; but all the same I think it's pretty silly.
Ailz has read that this summer's heatwave has warmed up the sea and the sea is still warming up the air and that's why the autumn breezes are balmy not chilly.
I gave myself a Halloween treat and watched a YouTube video about a phenomenon known as The Mineral Point Vampire- an oogli-boogly that was seen loitering around the graveyard of a small Wisconsin town looking a lot like the filmic idea of a vampire, and- when confronted by the police- ran off very fast and escaped by leaping over a six foot fence. When the police investigated next day they found footprints on the near side of the fence and none on the other- suggesting the critter had dematerialised in mid-air. This pattern of behaviour reminded the presenter of the 19th century British folk demon known as Spring-heeled Jack- who used to show up, give his victims a good scare, then make his escape by jumping over walls and housetops. Was the Mineral Point Vampire the same entity? Who knows? Neither of them caused much physical harm (Spring-heeled Jack once mauled a girl with his iron talons but without, I think, hurting her badly) and always ran off when challenged or confronted. What was their game? I wonder, what was the point of them? Truly the universe is full of all sorts of wonders- ranging from the sublime to the preposterous...
I'm reading the Second Part of Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. It has charm, it dips one back into the mid 17th century, its people are homely and keep breaking free from allegory and its theology is horrendous. Whoever first propounded that the Fear of God is the beginning of wisdom was an enemy of the human race.
