I can't account for the shadow that appeared in the corner of our bedroom the night before last. It was triangular, pitchy black- and didn't appear to be related to any existing light source. Normally that corner of the room is dimly lit by reflections from street lamps and the shadows are clear- like brown consomme- and you can see to the bottom of them. This shadow was impenetrable.

I wasn't scared, The thing didn't seem sinister. Eventually it went away. I wish now I'd got up and investigated it but I was just too comfortable in bed...

Was it a portal? Was someone observing us who didn't want to be observed? Or is there some laughably mundane explanation?

It had been raining hard and the ground was soaked but now the sun was shining- and it seemed like an ideal time to be planting Spring bulbs...

I used a tool like an outsize apple-corer. You screw it into the soil, remove a cylindrical plug, drop a bulb in the hole, then replace the top end of the plug. It's really rather satisfying.

Ailz went to the Meeting. When she came back she had a story about how one of the members- an old chap who makes waves but is essentially harmless (I make allowances because I think he is (a) very lonely (b) suffering from the early stages of dementia)- has had a letter from Quaker Central telling him he is now longer welcome. Ailz was shocked. I am shocked. No one consulted us about this- and I thought the Quaker way was to engage the membership and seek a common mind...

While she was out I settled down to watch Rivette's Duelle- in which Bulle Ogier and Juliet Berto- as a daughter of the Sun and a daughter of the Moon respectively- vie with one another for the possession of a mystical gemstone in a perpetually crepuscular Paris. It's a rare, rare movie- but the YouTube site that hosts it also has Rivette's legendary Out One- which is even rarer and runs for 13 hours. Well, well, well...

Rivette is my favourite director.
