"Come on, you sons of bitches. Do you want to live forever?"
These words of encoragement were supposedly uttered by Marine Sergeant Dan Daly as he led his men over the top for an attack on enemy positions at the Battle of Belleau Wood (1918). I employ it as a mantra whenever I hesitate to do something which might be a considered a little bit dangerous- like eating in a restaurant.
On a point of information Daly himself maintained that he didn't say "sons of bitches" but merely "men". On another point of information something similar was allegedly said by Frederick the Great at the Battle of Kolin (1757.)
