The tide was coming in. I know this becaue I was sitting on the stones with my feet pointing at the waves and had to keep shuffling backwards. After a while I took my shoes and socks off and let it overtake me.

There was a young couple- well, young by my standards-  horsing around in the water the way young couples do. It was nice to see, but on the whole- like Maurice Chevalier- I'm glad I'm not young any more. Those mating rituals take up so much time which could be better spent- I don't know- scanning NASA's photogaphs of the lunar surface for evidence of archaeology. The sites are there- I've seen 'em, I've seen 'em- or rather I've seen the pixelated areas that rather give the game away. Look for right angles, says Greg Braden, because Nature doesn't make right angles- and if you see one it's a wall.

Mary found a rock on the beach which had the tiniest, weeniest ammonite embedded in it. If there's one there must be more and now I know they're out there I'm going to be looking....
