I looked up from the screen a few minutes ago and a swan was flying past the window...

I dreamed I was out in the desert. My companion and I were riding those two-wheeled things- I forget what they're called- where you stand on a platform holding on to a steering column. We came to a place where there was some sort of camp and men working on a broken down vehicle. They were builders. And beyond the camp, through the dusty haze, we could see the apartment blocks they were putting up. We went further- and there were trees. Not palm trees or scrub thorn- but wide spreading English trees.

Then there was a river winding between the trees- a deep brown river-like the Thames in Oxfordshire.

"Where did they get the river from?" I cried. "Where did they get the river from?"

How nice to have shops within walking distance; it's one of the things I missed when we were living on the farm.

I set off this morning with a short shopping list and visited three shops on the one parade- first an odd little shop that sells lamps, potted plants and greengrocery, then to the Co-op on the corner, and finally because neither of the other two had lettuce to the little Tesco. The lighting shop had the best cauliflowers- and I liked his bedding plants so much I bought three- even though they weren't on the list.

None of them had courgettes.

Ailz says they're blaming shortages in the fruit and vegetable line on the war in Ukraine. Like her I'm not sure I believe them. I don't think everything can be Putin's fault...
