I glanced up a few minutes ago and it was snowing. It has stopped now but I shouldn't be surprised if there were more to come. From what I'm hearing the whole of Western Europe is going through an unseasonably cold spell.

There's a fierce wind too. We're used to living in the shelter of hedges and tall trees but there's none of that here. This isn't exactly a high spot- it's something like 50 foot above sea level- but that's higher than most of the town- and we have a view from our southern windows across a mile or so of rooftops to the low wall of the Sussex Downs.

We locked ourselves out of the house yesterday. After a brief pause for panic and reflection we knocked on our neighbour's door- and she let me go through her house and garden, and over the fence at the bottom (the cat showed me it was doable) and into our back garden. We have two back doors and one of them was open. The bit where I climbed the fence was exciting. She suggested she pile two garden chairs one on top of another and hold it steady while I climbed. And she did. I could hear her strength failing as I made the crossing.

And I thought my fence-climbing days were over.

We were on our way to the recycling centre when we locked ourselves out. It's literally round the corner, on the next street. We made two trips yesterday and will go again today.

I switched the TV on in the evening in case there was something I wanted to see. And there wasn't. There rarely is. So I decided it was time to resume the Dickens marathon. I can report that the first chapter of Dombey and Son is tremendous.

I dreamed last night that an old dear friend had come to visit. She had a fat-faced young man with her who was talking, pontificating even, on the subject of American politics. I told him I'd never heard of his Senator X and his Senator Y- and he took himself off. My friend gave me a meaningful look as if to say, but kindly, "what a silly young fool". We then took to talking about death and the afterlife. "I've never seen a ghost," I said. And she pointed between her eyebrows and said, "But you have your third eye."
