Telling The Time In Bexhill

We visit Bexhill regularly but we hadn't noticed this before.

From a distance it looks like a temporary installation- as if someone had laid cardboard squares at the foot of a flagpole. "It's a tarot spread," I said. "That's what I was thinking too," said Ailz.

Actually it's a sundial. And the cardboard squares are blocks of quartz or marble- and the flagpole is the gnomon.

It was installed in 2012 to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

I like sundials. Mechanical clocks are all very well- and I like them too, but there's something cosmic about asking the sun itself to tell you the time.
