I was brought up to believe that voting was a privilege and a duty- and ancestral ghosts nag at me if I allow myself to get too cynical about the process.

"So do you want to go and vote this morning?" Ailz asks.

I hestitate because I'd really rather not.

But then the ancestors start up.

"It gets us out of the house," I say.

We were voting for a county councilor, a town councilor and a police commissioner. The voting papers were white, pink and green; I forget which was which. I won't say how I voted but it wasn't for the Tories.

Masks were worn (of course) and the officers were protected by a plastic screen (which is new).

The forecast is that the Tories will do very well. They're benefiting from the winding down of the CV19 crisis and the fact that Labour, having recoiled from the chance to become full-bloodedly left-wing, is now a party in search of a purpose.
