This is the war memorial in the village of Burwash, East Sussex, designed by the church architect Sir Charles Nicholson. There's a lantern at the top- the idea being that it should be lit on the anniversaries of the deaths of each of the men whose names are listed below. One of those names is John Kipling- and I've seen it suggested that his father, who would have seen monuments of this type in France while working for the War Graves Commission, may have suggested the design.

Do they still light the lantern? I've no idea- I've only passed by in daytime- but it would be nice if they did.
