Full Stops
Aug. 24th, 2020 08:26 pmI noticed recently that I've a developed a reluctance to close any piece of writing with a full stop, preferring, where it isn't obviously ridiculous, to go "..." I'd thought it was just me being quirky but this morning's paper had a piece explaining how and why full stops are going out of fashion. It's a product of messaging- where the individual's contribution is so often part of an open, free form conversation- and interrupting the flow with punctuation can appear (and often is) egotistical and rude. A full stop suggests that the last word has been said- which is never actually the case. It's like going "End of"- and cutting off all further discussion.
