The lower field- which hasn't had a horse in it for several months- is reverting to woodland. The little trees are fanning out from the skirts of the bigger trees and brambles are starting up everywhere. I could take steps to discourage this but I'm not sure I see the point.

The upper field has a single horse in it. We're not expecting it to be joined by any others. Chris, the owner, is sick and has been selling off his herd. Our horse and the one that lives on Julia's land are the only two left- and they may be going too. The single horse keeps the vegetation cropped without annihilating it. There's a fine crop of large parasol mushrooms under the pine trees.
