At first you think it's going to be a detective story, then you think it's going to be a big lardy hunk of Southern Gothic and then- about halfway through- you wonder whether it's not turning into Treasure Island.

Actually it's a book about how family- genes and all that- is your fate-  and how your mother and father- but also your aunts and your brothers and sisters (uncles too, only there aren't any of those in this story) can seriously fuck you up.

As with her first book, though less so, a lot of the material comes from other books- but, wot the hell- Tartt's very good at people  and writes beautifully about time and place. The well-prepared for show-down is terrific.
