I sat out on the patio for an hour yesterday. It was a sit-down protest against the end of summer. The sun came out from between the clouds once or twice and was a little bit warming.

I made an apple pie this morning. The apples- bramleys- came off my mother's tree. I added lemon juice, grated ginger, muscovado sugar and a little apple juice. I don't think I've ever done anything better.

After lunch I had a bonfire. I love bonfires. They take me out of myself.

Those are the good things.

And now for the bad.

One of my mother's useless horses ran at Utoxeter this afternoon. We watched the race on TV. The useless jockey bumped the useless horse into a rail, nearly fell of and brought it in 9th. When I think of the enormous sums of money my mother is spending on her useless horses I am very, very angry- though quite who I'm angry at I'm not sure. My fury might have been less if the useless trainer had apologized to my mother instead of trying to tell her it had been "a wonderful race".

I sat on one of the kitchen chairs and the back came off.
