The older and feebler of the two horse chestnuts is already turning yellow.  When we got up this morning there was mist among the trees.

My mother got stung by a hornet in the night. Yes, again. Ailz and I walked round the house and located the new nest.  The pest controller said the colony he smoked out a fortnight ago was last year's and we could expect this year's brood along shortly- in time for the fruit going rotten. There's a lot of fruit to go rotten in Kent.

Talking about hornets: Matthew was working among the raspberry canes this morning and disturbed a wasps nest. He came running down the path shouting.  By the time he reached us they'd got him three or four times. He left that job half done and went to cut the grass instead.

Talking about fruit: After he'd cut the grass Matthew drew my attention to some fruiting plum trees espaliered against the wall of Lee's kitchen garden. They're on our side of it and so our property- apparently. Anyway, Lee's in America and allergic to plums so she's not going to dispute our right.  I went out and picked a couple of pounds.
