Sanditon: Jane Austen
Oct. 8th, 2012 12:38 pmAusten's world is changing.
Sanditon is a Sussex fishing village that's being developed into a seaside resort. One of the leading characters is the speculator who's working the change. He lives at Trafalgar House and wishes he'd called it Waterloo House because Waterloo is more the thing these days. Another is a silly man who lards his conversation with romantic buzzwords and thinks he's God's gift to women; our sensible heroine clocks him as a wrong'un when he starts praising Burns. Three pages from the end a black woman puts in an appearance- a Miss Lambe, " a half mulatto".
