Last night I watched a movie on Cinemoi- a channel that shows nothing but French films with English subtitles. I love French films simply for being French. Last night's movie- Arsene Lupin- reboots an early twentieth century pop-cultural hero and is, I suppose, the French equivalent of Christopher Nolan's Batman movies- less glossy, but considerably more sophisticated. Arsene Lupin-  gentleman thief- thwarts a royalist plot, duels with a father who had gone over to the dark side and gets hopelessly entangled with the wicked Countess Cagliostro. It's silly and mythic and lots of fun. Lupin is played by the darkly-handsome Romain Duris- an actor I'll be looking out for in future- and the Countess by the majestic and ageless Kristin Scott-Thomas. Cinemoi goes pay-to-view at the end of next month. I think I may subscribe.

It's two hours before midnight and the fireworks are already going off. I went outside to put rubbish in Rene's bin- which I've co-opted because ours is already full- and they were launching cheap rockets from a house down the road- and a couple of young men were stood in a front yard a little nearer to me having one of those loud conversations in Urdu that sounds like an argument but isn't really.

The last day of 2010 has been dull and damp and misty.
