We went and collected our mid-20th century display cabinet from the shop in Marple. We don't have anywhere to put it yet because the front living room, where it will eventually stand, has only half a floor, but we said, when we bought it, we'd collect it in three weeks time so we did.

The shop lady was saying this other couple were mad to buy it but she told them it was ours and they couldn't have it so they had to be satisfied with another piece of hers- less chunky, less utility, less Orwellian-honest. This made me feel all warm and smug. I'm a man of taste with an eye for a bargain. Heh-heh-heh!

While we were there we bought an art deco mirror with a green glass surround. Another object of beauty, another bargain. I love Deco. It's a taste I share with Hercule Poirot.

If I had a better idea of what I was doing I'd buy English blue and white crockery, but I don't so I won't.

And now that I've said I won't, I probably will. The thing is we've got nothing to display in our display cabinet- unless, of course, we fill it with books. But a nice display of blue and white- wouldn't that be pretty?
