I surprised myself last night with the thought that churches are female. But of course they are- and so are all other buildings.

I checked this against the only language I'm familiar with that genders its nouns and was happy to find that the French agree with me.

I wonder why some languages went down the route of gendering everything- and others didn't...

Even an attempt to create a 'world' language like Esperanto made that mistake- they were incapable of seeing past it.
