Fearful Symmetry



Another view of the roof at the east end of Tewkesbury cathedral.

It reminds me of the Mandelbrot set...

Of course the designer wouldn't- couldn't- have known about the Mandelbrot set- which wasn't discovered and visualised until the second half of the 20th century- but he was an artist and a mathematician and he was trying to create something symmetrical and beautiful so it's not altogether surprising if he came within striking distance...

Mathematical formulae are eternal. The Mandelbrot set may have been beyond the ken of a medieval architect but it has always been known to the angels.
