There's a certain melancholy pleasure in watching the celebrities of one's youth pass into obscurity.

I don't think so. He deplores Thatcher- and calls her selling off of council houses a crime.

I reckon he simply regards poets- even minor ones- as of more importance than prime ministers- and that's not something I'd argue against.
