Changes

We all think consumerism has got out of hand, but when people spend less over Christmas it's reported as if it were something terrible.

We all want to cut pollution, but when a car manufacturer shuts down factories that produce cars that run on diesel that too is reported as a disaster.

Political upheaval is particularly frightening; we're all agreed that the rulers of the world are a frightful shower and the system that sustains them is corrupt and ineffectual, but when that system starts to fall apart we find it terrifying.

Change always comes with a cost- insecurity, loss of employment, loss of income, loss of life.

We all want a better world- but we don't want to belong to the generation that brings it about.

You could add house prices to your list: we all agree that they are too high, but when they fall, it is reported as a bad thing.

And I agree with you up to a point: this is partly about what 'we all' think. But it is also about how our news media respond to the latest superficial change, without looking deeper..

The Authorities however defined decide to make life a little less bloody for trans people and lo and behold, the world will come to an end if 'these people' are allowed a slightly easier time.............
