We've done all our Christmas shopping and I sort of assumed everybody in Canterbury would have done theirs too. Wrong- and it was a real chore trying to find a parking place in the central area. But I got one thing right; December isn't a month for tourism- and the cathedral wasn't crowded- which was nice.

There were two cheerful policemen posted at the precinct gate. They were wearing flak jackets and toting plastic guns which looked like toys but almost certainly weren't. The cathedral website said we weren't to let them alarm us; there had been no particular threat, but one can never be too careful.

I know Canterbury well- I spent three years there as a student- and my sister used to live in a nearby village- but this is the first time I've been round the cathedral with a camera. They have the builders in- which means a lot of views I might have taken were obscured by scaffolding or netting. The light was poor in parts of the building, so there was no point in trying to take the Black Prince's portrait- or Henry IV's, though I managed a nice shot of Henry Chichele. I'll post that tomorrow...

This is the crossing, shot from the Martyrdom- which is where the four knights caught up with Becket and made a hash of him.

And this is the east end.

Such a sad comment on something, not to mention the obscene entry fee they now charge.

I was also a student in Canterbury for six years in total at both UKC (MA) and Christ Church (PGCE and PG Dip SNE) and would take my books into the cloister to study.

No chance of that now. :o(

Beautiful. If we make it back to the UK some day, I'd like to get to Canterbury.
