Channel 4 was showing Back To The Future III yesterday afternoon. It's my favourite part of the trilogy- mainly because I love a good western- which is what it is. (Among other things.) Also because it flatters my inner film buff with its affectionate nods towards those two great stylists of the genre, John Ford and Sergio Leone.

Again it's a train movie. And trains are essentially cinematic- as film-makers have understood ever since the Lumiere brothers panicked audiences with their footage of a train steaming into the station at La Ciotat. .

I was wondering whether anyone had noticed the similarities between The Back To The Future franchise and Dr Who so I checked on line. Well of course they have. There's crossover fanfic. Well, of course there is.

I somehow never watched any of the Back to the Future films.

Of course from seeing brief clips on TV I'm familiar with many of the iconic scenes and lines, but I've never sat through them.

It's the first one I ever saw.

I think it pretty much stands alone.

It did for me. I didn't see the first one for years and I didn't feel I was missing anything.
