Ants

 Ants!

How did they know that a cupboard halfway up the wall is where we keep the honey, jam and sugar?

They can smell it, I suppose.

But from outside the house?

Evidently. Or perhaps they sent their scouts in to do a general reconnaissance and they found it after taking a good look at everything.

Ants are awesome. 

Ailz says we should wipe the shelves down with peppermint oil because they hate the smell- so that's what I've done.

It just takes one finding the cupboard for the whole damn family to come and feast.

Peppermint oil is a good preventive; so is cayenne pepper.

It seems they don't like any strong flavours- apart that is from sweet ones.

I rather think it did.

But it's early days.

Pretty much, yes --- any strong aromatic repels them, especially those aromatics which are high in essential oils.
