Doing The Right Thing

We expect too much of our politicians.

They're not the only ones with power. And legislation isn't the only way of effecting social change. For instance while the US politicians were agonising and weaselling over gun control the bosses at Walmart and Dick's simply went ahead and changed their sales policy.

What does it say about the health of a democracy when its shop keepers are more sensitive than its elective representatives to what the public wants?

From the whining and threats coming from certain Republican politicians when the companies changed track, I'd say that the politicos are so lost in their own privilege and self importance that they've forgotten who the public are.

Same goes for here too!

Just so!

I'll never forgive that bloody fool Cameron for doing this!

Outdoor gear store REI is going a step further. They are looking at the practices and policies of the companies whose gear they stock on their shelves, and severing some relationships.

Interesting times, eh?

And yet ... we complain too at the lack of democracy when "unaccountable" corporates lobby and apply pressure to governments.
