McCabe And Mrs Miller

McCabe And Mrs Miller is a hippie western.

It is dedicated to the proposition that the world would be a happier place if we all lived in a big, jolly whorehouse run by Warren Beatty.

Unfortunately there are wicked men out there, who share Warren's love of money but not his principled devotion to whiskey and fine women, and they want to put him out of business.

Cue gunplay.

It would be a better movie if our hero didn't have such mean, calculating little eyes.

I never could fancy Warren Beatty, just because of those beady little rats eyes.

Exactly.

I don't think he's that good an actor either. In McCabe and Mrs Miller he and Julie Christie are surrounded by a strong supporting cast- Rene Auberjonois, Shelley Duvall, Willaim Devane, Keith Carradine- who act them both off the screen.

My feelings are that Donald Duck and Pluto could act them off the screen.

hehehe. I believe they could.

Apparently Beatty was a real pain on the set of this film, demanding endless takes etc. Director Robert Altman sweetly gave him his head, because, after all, he- Altman- was the one who had the final cut.

But Beatty is a genuine, hard-core, dyed-in-the-wool leftie. Did you ever see Bulworth?/i> Very silly, but proper socialist stuff. I'll forgive him a lot for that.

Yes, I liked Bulworth.

There are aspects of Beatty I admire. I just wish they'd cast somone else- almost anybody else- in this particular movie.

t would be a better movie if our hero didn't have such mean, calculating little eyes. I was about to say "at last, someone said it" but I notice that [livejournal.com profile] idahoswede agreed with you before I could. AND, leftie or not, Beatty never could act. I never found him attractive, not even when he was young and in Splendour in the Grass with Natalie Wood.

I have fond memories of Bonnie and Clyde, but it's a long time since I last saw it and I'm afraid to watch it now in case I really, really hate it.

Which I think entirely possible.

I watched a Western of my own last night - Peace Hotel (a Chinese Western, starring Chow Yun Fat and with John Woo as Executive Producer).

Not sure why I'm sharing that, but there it is!

Westerns are for sharing....

I love 'em.

Well, give this one a try, then. If you don't like it, though, don't shoot me!! :)
