 What's your favourite animal? asked my eldest granddaughter.

Ermmmmm. Difficult. 

In the end I decided I have a special fondness for birds and if I had to pick a single one it would be the wren.

Cats. I like all cats.

My problem with cats- including ours- is that they kill birds and small mammals- and I'm fond of those.

They are the little mass murderers of the animal world. But I love them anyway.

They do what they do. They have their part in the eco-system. We got our cat in the hope that he'd keep the local rodents in check- which he does to a certain extent- though the only things he ever kills are shrews and voles.
