Simon Wiesenthal

[livejournal.com profile] mahaloluinoa says she hasn't read anything on LJ about the death of Simon Wiesenthal but lots about some guy called Bob Denver.

Time to correct this.

Wiesenthal was the man who refused to let the Nazis get away with it. A holocaust survivor himself, he headed a mom and pop organisation that tracked fugitive nazis all over the globe and ran them to earth. His biggest coup was finding and arranging the capture of Adolf Eichmann, the speccy little bureacrat who do more than anyone else to industrialise mass murder.

Wisenthal said of his work that he was putting down a marker. He wanted the political killers and torturers of the future to be running scared, to know that sooner or later someone would come looking for them.

He was a great and righteous man.

A great and righteous man, indeed. We need more like him.

He was a one off. He dedicated himself to a task that the governments of the world couldn't be arsed to do.

[Must.Resist.Urge.To.Climb.On.Hobbyhorse.]

Resistance is futile. In my opinion, the more of us that don't count on the government to take care of the important stuff, the better.

You may be surprised to know that I more or less agree with you.....

It would go:

Here's a list of things I can do better than the government. Bold the ones you already do. Italicize the ones you think maybe you could do. Strikeout the ones you think the government does better. Add your own "things I can do better" to the bottom. Pass it on.

Could be interesting.

The one thing I really wouldn't be without is our National Health Service

Oh, gosh! That's on my list of things I can do better myself.

What- health?

But just think, no worries about whether you've got insurance cover or can afford the treatment etc...etc...

Thanks, but I'm a lot happier paying my own way. Even though, many times, I'm paying for the fact that so many others don't.

Well, I'm pretty much of an age with the NHS. The Attlee government of 45-51 brought it in and I've known no other way.

I hope you don't think I can only connect to history via movies, but didn't Olivier play him in The Boys From Brazil ???

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2005-09-21 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
I believe he did. Or a character who was based on him.

[identity profile] lblanchard.livejournal.com 2005-09-21 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
I think it may have been a character based on him. On the other hand, Gregory Peck did indeed play Mengele.

[identity profile] philtration.livejournal.com 2005-09-22 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Olivier played a Mengele type character in "The Marathon Man" staring Dustin Hoffman. A very good flick to see if you have not already done so.

a great and righteous man, but let's face it, he was no Gilligan. ;)

Ach- so that's who Bob Denver was!

Honestly, I didn't know. I've heard of the show, but it never actually played over here.

Actually he played a wonderful teenage beatnik "wannabe" named "Maynard C. Krebs" in an earlier series called Dobie Gillis back in the day... and he was very special in a lot of ways... no Wiesenthal though, truth be told.

We get a lot of US TV over here, but there are some "classic" shows that have never made the crossing.

Another example is the Brady Bunch. They released the recent movie in our cinemas and the British public stayed away in droves.

You had to see the show to understand the parody of the film. Showing the movie in a country that never aired the TV show was pretty stupid.

I take it you like Yellow Tail?

Yellowtail...

[identity profile] jubal51394.livejournal.com 2005-09-21 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Last month I went to Florida for a visit. I got sick while I was there and my new heart doctor recommended a glass of red wine with dinner every day. As a rule I don't care for red wine, but a really savvy waiter in a very posh restaurant opened me a bottle of Yellowtail. Yummy stuff... for a prescription, I thought.

Now I'm back home in Oklahoma. We have state owned liquor stores here and I am limited to only the brands that they stock. I may never buy another legal bottle of Yellowtail and I'm a little obsessive about it. What can I say? I get really riled when the state tells me what I can't have.

Yeah. The type really gets lost when you shrink their logo, you can take this one.
