Untimely?

We were going down a road called Waggon Lane- wide enough to allow the passage of Constable's Hay Wain and God help you if there was another wain coming in the opposite direction- and something went bang on the roof. Then another thing went bang on the windscreen and this time we saw what it was: we were being bombarded with acorns.

Is my memory adrift or is autumn coming very early this year? I mean it's still August and acorns are falling and chestnut leaves are turning all brown and crinkly and the hedges are full of blackberries. I've been putting off picking apples because of the date but I reckon they're just about ready.

It is early here for sure.

We were up the Wrekin today and both the Welsh and English oaks were dropping and the leaves are turning and the beechmast is also falling (although it was pretty windy last night) and the blackberry crop is just tremendous- we were sampling as we went! The ferns are starting to brown too.

Hay harvest is in and about the only field crop left to cut is the wheat- the oats, barley and rape are all down.

Discovery and spartan are ripe, coxes not quite and the russets will be later because they always are. The cherries this year are simply wonderful.

Our autumn is coming on rapidly. I think it's early this year.

Looking at recipes to use our heavy crop of brambles, I found one for 'October Pudding'. The leaves are beginning to tuen, too.
