Political Change

We expect too much of politicians- hence our disillusionment. You can't change the human heart by act of parliament and it's the heart that needs to change.

Is it too much to ask to expect them to be good people, in the first place? I don't think it's hard to be a good person...

Good people don't usually hunger for power- which means they're unlikely to get to the top in politics.

I recall running across the idea that liberals believe that people can change and that appeals to their better aspects can result in rapid improvement, while conservatives take a much dimmer view of human nature - seeing it as basically unchangeable except over very long periods of time, and then only gradually.

I think there's historical evidence for both, really.

I think that's broadly true.
