Frost on the ground. Clear skies. Sunshine.

I went out this morning to find the horses gathered round the water butts they drink from. The butts were sealed with ice. Not thick ice but too thick for them to break.  I fetched an axe. One of the butts was empty so I switched on the tap to the hose that feeds them- only nothing came through because the hose had split.

Bitter here first thing.

Not much above freezing even now at midday although the sun's shining.

Ah. The tinkle of breaking ice. And the fishing out of the big pieces of ice from the trough with frozen fingers... I miss that early morning ritual.

Though I don't missing lugging water canisters when everything freezes; not at all.

There's some warmth in the sunshine- if experienced directly.

Don't horses drink a lot!

Their owner is coming over later today or perhaps tomorrow to fix up the hose- so I don't think I'll be lugging canisters about- or at least not yet.

We always had to turn off supply to the outside faucets in November because of this, turning them back on when the snow melted in April.
