Learning All About Horses

The owner of the ponies came and fed them sliced white bread. Horses like sliced white bread, who knew?

Earlier Ailz had given them carrots. We discovered that all you have to do is call, "Come over here," and they come. I hadn't realised they were quite so tame. The owner has an even simpler method of summoning them.  He shakes his bags of Wonderloaf- and they hear it from a field away.

Three of the ponies are cobs. The third is part cob, part Dartmoor and stands a little higher.

We have found that even a big stud stallion will come and say hi if you make a noise like a carrot! :o)

I suppose they're tame because they were once somebody's ponies. Horses are usually happy to be friendly once they've lived with humans unless they were very abused.
They're lovely creatures and they'll get to recognize you in no time and will come to the fence even when you have no food.(though they will expect it)

the neighbors horses love peppermints
best not to give them too many..
they are both gone now.
I wouldn't have loved to ride
but the owners are skittery making me wary.
the handler of a horse make a huge difference.

I know very little about their history. Or what age they are. I do know one of them is pregnant...

First day they were here I went out into the field with them and they just blanked me. I had expected them to be a little shy- and they weren't at all.

I've no wish to ride.

I had riding lessons when I was a kid. I'm glad to have had the experience but I'm not wanting to repeat it.

I like living alongside animals- letting them be themselves, not intervening too much in their lives.

Sliced white bread is not actually very good for horses. A little is OK for a treat or to lure them over for daily checking, but I hope the owner isn't feeding them too much of it. If they're undernourished, they need proper equine food such as pony nuts or the various horse mixes they have nowadays. Otherwise, just grass and hay is all ponies need or they'll get fat and then there's the danger of laminitis.

These will mostly be eating grass. They're in a large field and there's lots of it. The owner says he'll bring over hay in case there's snow...
