Jet liners are a 20th century technology and long overdue to be replaced by something more efficient and less polluting- like airships, anti-gravity machines (flying saucers) or transporters (as in Star Trek)

The need we have to whizz all over the place to talk to one another has been obviated by video conferencing et al. Business and government haven't woken up to this yet- but they will.

Air travel is so unpleasant these days- for all sorts of reasons- it's a wonder people still put themselves through it. The next generation- never having acquired the habit-  will have better sense.

Brexit is already causing people to take their holidays at home instead of Magaluf or Phuket. As we get poorer- as we almost certainly will as an unsustainable global economy goes pear-shaped- we'll be globetrotting less and less.

Opposition to the expansion at Heathrow is powerful- and has champions in high places. Already the decision (still warm from the oven) has triggered a by-election. It's an issue that could wreck this divided government with its very small majority.

There you are: Five excellent reasons why the third runway at Heathrow will almost certainly never be built.

Much as I love aeroplanes, and even airports, I have high hopes for airships too.

I'll give you a sixth reason: this government (in its various forms) has an aversion to following through decisions.

Important report on health and social care - Dilnot - reported and was widely welcomed. Nothing came of it.

Huge report on press misdemeanours and worse - Levenson - reported and was widely welcomed. Nothing happened.

Flagship economic policy: wiping out deficit by a certain date, then a certain other date, and now sometime never.

The Tories have shown themselves repeatedly incapable of implementing complicated policies, good or bad, though they're quite capable of making people's lives and jobs difficult in their shambling attempts at same (vide what they've done to schools over the last six years, or universal credit). For these reasons, I somewhat doubt their ability to deliver either Brexit or the Heathrow runway.

I like aeroplanes too- but not in great concentrations- and I think there are already quite enough of them flying over West London.

I think Brexit will be overtaken by events- probably the break-up of the EU in its present form. I was listening to a talk this morning where the man was saying that in 10 years time we'll look back at the passions the issue currently arouses and wonder what all the fuss was about.

I miss aeroplanes when I'm somewhere that isn't regularly flown over!

I don't suppose I've ever lived anywhere that wasn't.

Videoconferencing is one of those 'just around the corner' technologies that has never quite caught up with it's promise. Maybe the VR revolution will be the thing which makes it a substitute for face to face interaction but I have my doubts.

Most of my international work travel is to visit large groups of people; video conferencing sucks for that.

That's interesting.

VR is still in its early stages. I don't see why in a few years time it shouldn't be able to create virtual conference rooms all but indistinguishable from the real thing.

Oh, I hope so. Travelling for work loses its shine very quickly.
