Olivia Colman can do no wrong, but...

I'm getting tired of black comedy. It's been in the ascendent too long.  This sort of thing- botched suicide attempts, grannies dying amusingly, fun with nooses-  only works if it shocks- and by now it's old hat. The storyline where the central male character was mistaken for a paedophile seemed promising but when the punchlines came they weren't delivered bare-knuckled but with gloves on.

The production values are high, the performances are excellent, but the script doesn't break any taboos that haven't been broken many times before.

If one asks me about humor: It's the trivial everyday stuff that mockery's missing about. A little bit of megalomania and insanity inserted to it; it's been far too long that they only make jokes about daily politics or about stuff that's only relevant in America.

This is a British show- very British. It's about an eccentric and not very likeable middle-class family living in the countryside- so there aren't any political or specifically America jokes.
