Pitchfork Time

Trump is heading up a peasants' revolt. The people waving torches and pitchforks aren't going to be worried whether what he says makes sense or accords with what he said yesterday. What they're following is the noise he makes.

Hillary represents everything the peasants are revolting against. I can't see her saying anything to make them cast aside the pitchforks.

A vote for Hillary is a vote for business as usual. A vote for Trump is a vote for God only knows what. But this is a revolutionary moment in western politics- and electorates everywhere are wondering whether God only knows what isn't the more attractive option.

I do think that 95% of American Womanhood was ready to bust Mr. Trump in the mouth, or possibly relieve him of his generative apparatus, after last night's display.

I don't think it's ever been in doubt that Trump is a very nasty man- and yet here he is running for the presidency...

I try not to worry about the US presidential elections. To be honest, Danish politics at present are scary enough for me! We have politicians in parliament saying things that Trump hasn't said - yet.

A friend wrote to me last night "I get really, really sad when they say I'm not Danish"... She was born here, her mother is Danish - but her father came from India and her skin is brown. She can make pastries that would make my grandmother bow her head in shame, she can correct MY grammar - and I'm quite a stickler for grammar - and she is basically just as Danish as bacon! (She doesn't eat beef, though. Perhaps that will be the next citizen test? Eating your way through an entire farmyard of animals?)

It's happening all over the western world. The old political order is cracking up and all sorts of creepy-crawly are coming out of the woodwork. People are angry and scared.

I think it's more complicated than that. People are angry and hopeless and Trump has given them a voice.

It does seem that there are some fundamental things at stake - and to believe in democracy is to have the basic believe that while some people might be stupid, the vast majority of people are perfectly capable of making up their mind within their personal logic. And that logic might include being fed up with "the establishment".

Personally I believe in our current systems and their adaptability - but that doesn't mean I can dismiss the opinions of others, even when they go against every grain of my moral and political habitus. After all, I want the right to my opinion - so I have to respect that the opinions of others doesn't come from stupidity, but from a different point of view.

And to resolve this, we need to talk with each other. If I say "those people are stupid and WRONG!" then I'll hardly reach any middle ground with them ever. Gosh, I really AM a big ole hippie at heart, aren't I?

I think the world is changing- and we're in for a rough ride over the next few years. I don't know where we'll end up, but if we can make the transition without killing one another in vast numbers it'll be some sort of a triumph.

I feel increasingly aware of my own privilege. I have a mortgage in my flat, but I own my house with no debt, so I can ride out whatever comes. Not everybody is as fortunate, though.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I fear, though, that 30 years from now I'll have to explain to my nephews' kids what happened. I do hope it won't come to that.
