A Beaker Full Of the Warm South
Jul. 30th, 2005 12:01 pmWe were in Lidl the other day and I bought a bottle of wine on the strength of it's having come from Catalonia. It cost me of £2.99.
It'll probably be horrid, but one of the good things about me is I'm not a wine snob. I'll drink anything- pretty much. Wine is wine is wine. I have no palate.
We bought a bottle back with us from holiday. I'm keeping it for a special occasion that never comes. Actually it's more like a talisman, a link to another time and place. A portal. So long as it's there, the holiday is - on some rarified plane- still going on.
But now that I've found a supply of replacements perhaps I can get it drunk.

Date: 2005-07-30 04:47 pm (UTC)"I have no palate"--! I remember college days, taking pretty bottles of grape-juice tasting awful stuff to parties...I would actually look for the prettiest bottles, thinking about what they would look like later with candles dripping down from the top...
When I first started dating my husband-to-be, he would quote this bit of a song to me:
Have some madiera, My dear.
I have a small flask of it here.
Do finish it off, it will help you to sleep.
And once it is opened, you know it won't keep.
And he carved a new notch on his gold-handled cane,
Singing "Have some madiera, My dear.
