Sniffles

Ailz says I can't have hay fever because it's the wrong time of year, but there must be something in the natural environment I'm allergic to because I seem to get the sniffles at the start of every Spring. They came on me last night in the wolf hours when everything seems desperate and insurmountable- and I wrestled with them for an hour or so before getting up and making myself a cup of tea and spending an hour with a good book.

I'm reading Conan Doyle's People of the Mist- in which the heroes of The Lost World- Prof Challenger et al-  become converts to Spiritualism. It's not so much a novel as a fictionalisation of Doyle's own adventures in psychical research. The chapter about the haunted house is terrific.

The sniffles are a bore but losing sleep because of them is really debilitating.

Just a random drive-by comment as your post was on LJ's front page, but you can indeed get hayfever this early in the year! If just depends which kind of pollen you're allergic to. If you're allergic to grass pollen it probably won't kick in until late spring/early summer, but certain trees start releasing their pollen in March. I got it in March where I used to live - presumably there were trees there releasing pollen I was allergic too - but don't usually get it until April or May now, although I started feeling a bit hayfevery earlier this month for a bit.

So there you go, it could be hayfever!

It's not the wrong time of the year for pollen allergies (a better term than hay fever). Trees pollinate very early and tree pollen is some of the most reactive. A mild antihistamine might be of help. I've had pollen allergies since I was a child.
It could also be mould spores.

After saying for most of my life that I don't suffer from hay fever, since the wood grew up beyond our back garden, I've been forced to admit that I am affected by tree pollen. See my icon for how many trees surround our house. The sniffles have already started. :(

There are a lot of molds in the air in the damp and warmth of spring. I get wheezy and phlegmy in the spring too. It could be leafy stuff too as the trees bud out. My bet is mold spores though.

Does Land of the Mist stand on its own, or should I re-read* The Lost World first?

It stands alone. Doyle wanted to write a book about spiritualism and had these characters to hand and decided to reuse them. Their former adventures are referred to on the opening page and then forgotten.
