Hereafter

A reluctant psychic and the survivor of a Near Death Experience are brought together by a bereaved child. Think Sleepless in Seattle with glum people. The heroine suffers her NDE in a well-staged tsunami- the movie's only genuinely exciting sequence- but for all the relevance of this to later developments she might just as well have choked on an orange pip. Big issues and international tragedies (the 7/7 London bombings are also shoehorned in) are co-opted to lend gravitas to a formulaic and uninvolving tearjerker. The afterlife sequences- a major selling point- are brief and unimaginative.  Peter Morgan wrote the script, Clint Eastwood directed- and it's untypical of both of them.

Not so many years ago there was a very short lived series on tv on Friday nights. It was called "Brimstone". It starred Peter Horton (among others.) It was about a cop who planted evidence on his wife's rapist so he (the rapist) would be convicted. Unfortunately the rapist is killed in prison, which turns (Ezekiel) into a murderer. He dies, and is sent to hell. He makes a deal with the Devil, to bring back souls that have escaped. It was VERY dark, and I still can't believe it was on Network TV here. It wasn't, for very long, there were 12 episodes made and I think only 8 made it to network. SyFy shows it once in awhile, the whole series, but I always miss it. I'm telling you about it, hoping that you can get your hands on it because I do think you'd like it.

That sounds like good fun.

I'm not sure whether it was shown over here or not. I'd vaguely heard of it so perhaps it was- probably on a minor channel and late at night.
