When the tower was built New Romney was an important port and the church stood at the very edge of the harbour. Then there was a big storm and the river changed its course- and the town is now over a mile from the sea.

As with many Norman church towers I think the builders were also thinking in terms of defence. It wasn't at all unusual for these south coast ports to be raided- usually by the French.

It's a really handsome building. It reminds me- the tower especially- of Tewkesbury Abbey.
