Early Morning Conversation Over The Newspaper

1. "Don McLean..."

2. "He's died?"

1. "No, much worse: he's been arrested for domestic violence."

2. "Yes, that is worse."

That taints his music, sadly. (And I really love his music, but I don't really love abusers.)

I do hope I can separate the oeuvre from the artist, though. I'd be sad to have to cut his music out of my musical backdrop.

I feel much the same way. I can look with indulgence on some misdemeanours- but domestic violence isn't one of them.

Actually - and I suspect you might agree with me on this one - I dislike any kind of violence, domestic or not.

He has eliminated himself from the "icon" league. His music is great, but he, sadly, seems not to be so great.

I dislike violence too, but domestic violence- which generally means the stronger partner bullying the weaker- is particularly nasty.

Prince Gesualdo da Venosa was a double murderer, but I still listen to his compositions many of which were written while he was trying to atone for his crimes.

Caravaggio was a killer too- and a thoroughly unstable nut-job- but also one of the greatest painters.

One could go on...

One prefers to like the artists one admires but it's not entirely necessary.

Twice over, indeed!

Richard Dadd is a local boy here...........

Also not a surprise. He's had problems for a long time. I'm sorry to hear this, though.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2016-01-19 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew nothing about his private life- until now.

I think that life would be better if we knew less about celebrities' private lives. It's really none of our business. I dislike the feeding frenzies and try not to pay attention but..you know.

I agree. It's particularly the case with actors. We really don't need to know who they are when they'e not pretending to be someone else. If they have very high profile private lives it distracts from what they're trying to do in their work.

Yeah...how often do I hear "Well, *I* think (so and so) is a really nice person, and that's why I like his/her movies." Do I care that Cary Grant maybe was bi-sexual? Or that Tyrone Power was? Absolutely not. I love their movies. Montgomery Clift was a wonderful actor. I just plain don't care what your personal life is like, all I care about is do I like your acting. This is why I do NOT like Matthew McConaughey, it has nothing to do with his press but with the fact that I think he sucks as an actor. I used to ride the bus,in the morning, with an ex Marine ex-con who loved 'Abby' in NCIS. (that would be Paulie Perette). He used to compare every single woman he met/saw with 'Abby'. It used to make me laugh...

But it's like confusing the singer with the song.

I'm sorry. I'll step off my soapbox now.

Cary Grant once said something like, "Everybody wants to be Cary Grant- and so do I." In real life Archibald Leach seems to have been a terribly conflicted person- a far cry from his suave persona- but that was his business. The important thing for everybody else is that he was a consummate screen actor.

Yes. He most certainly was.

Sad.
