Symbiosis

We put out fat balls in a hanging container. They're buggy fat balls- meaning they contain dead bugs.  The woodpecker stabs at them in order to get at the bugs and the blackbird hops about underneath in order to snaffle the falling debris.

Which only goes to show how bright blackbirds are! :o)

Blackbirds are not fools. They always take the easy option.

We put out suet cakes that are bug free, but have other things embedded. The sparrows and woodpeckers love them, and the squirrels have give up trying to get some. Sparrows fly away the minute I get near, but the woodpeckers just look at me and keep pecking away. It's nice to be able to get that close and admire the feathers.

Our woodpeckers are shy. They catch sight of movement within the house and they're off.
