The Noise

My mother watches television from just after lunch until she turns in for the night. Today because it's the yearly celebration of militarism Remembrance Sunday she's started earlier. I won't say I never watch with her but mostly I keep my distance. Of course- small house, deaf old lady- I'm never out of earshot. Over the past two and a half years I've come to think of TV as The Noise.

One of the saddest things about contemporary life, I think, is the fact that The Noise is omnipresent in so many households nowadays.

I got rid of my TV cable years ago partly because of that ... but I certainly can't be self-righteous, because now I have a radio blaring for most of my waking hours. What do we all have against silence?

Bye,

Sorry you feel that way. It's been nice knowing you.

We're afraid of ourselves- of the thoughts that can come crowding in if we lower the screens.

I really do not mind silence at all but then noot all the time.

We don't have any TV at home. But when my mom was alive, we had to buy one, because it was only way to make her do something. She had Alzheimer's disease.

I like silence. I like it a lot.

My wife and I got rid of our TV shortly before we moved down here. When we move again we won't be buying one.

Growing up my mother always had the radio on. I don't think I really knew what silence was or how much I needed it to function until I left home.

Looking back I think my mother was just desperately trying not to drown in her own thoughts. Radio 2 was her buoyancy aid.

My mother had the radio on most of the time when I was a kid. This was before The numbered the BBC radio stations.
I think what she mostly listened to was The Home Service.
