Midsummer always takes me by surprise. The warm weather has only just begun and suddenly- bish, bash, bosh- summers's half way over.

Midsummer is always just the beginning of summer here in Denmark. It's when schools close for the summer holidays and when the days should hopefully turn warmer through July.

My summer is always mainly July and August, and Midsummer and Saint John's Eve with the big bonfires all over Denmark is just the herald that summer is arriving!

(Though of course politically speaking one is tempted to say "winter is coming"...)

Midsummer is something of a misnomer. In terms of human experience anyway. For us too the truly summery months are July and August- and perhaps the beginning of September.

It's way too soon. Still, at least I've got a few more months of being able to stay out rabbiteering until the evening, until the dreaded loss of Summer Time, an anachronism that ought to've been discarded long ago - UK time should simply be UTC+1 year round.

See, where we are it really hasn't started yet. That's why when I read 'mid summer' I think...no,that's the end of July.

Our summer's halfway over, too. 4 months in, 4 months left to go.

It's because of seasonal lag. Basically, although we are getting the maximum hours of strong sunlight now, the earth is both slow to warm up, and retains the heat efficiently once it has done so. So we reach maximum ambient temperature about a month after maximum sunlight.

That makes sense. :)

I wholly agree about BST. It's a pain.

Mid July makes better sense- in experiential terms anyhow.

Eight months of summer sounds good.

Eight months of English summer sounds good. Imagine eight months of summer at the same latitude as Cairo.

Not so attractive.
