I don't know why we bother with the weather forecast. Yesterday we were told to expect thunderstorms and what we got was one of the loveliest days of the year. We went to Hastings- and hung about on Rock-a-Nore road- where the cliffs of the East Hill loom up on one side and the Stade with its wooden net houses and beached fishing boats stretches down to the sea on the other. The new(ish) Jerwood Gallery occupies a section  of the road's southern side. It shows exhibitions of modern British art and has a very well-chosen core collection of its own. The current exhibitions focus on Scottish painters (among them the daring colourist Anne Redpath) and Edward Burra- who is the English Max Ernst only better.

We seem to have changed our minds. When we come to be looking for a retirement home it'll be Hastings at the top of the list. I've always been in love with Sussex, and now Ailz is too.

Hello! I am in Kent! It is very posh down here. I don't know how you stand it...

It can be very trying...

But it's not all posh. Take a look at the Medway towns- Rochester, Gravesend etc) or Thanet (which is dirt poor) or Ashford or Dymchurch.

My granddad grew up in Erith- on the Thames- which is really shitty.

You anywhere near Tunbridge Wells? Any chance of you dropping by?

Alas no. I'm in Canterbury doing a PhD viva, not on a jolly, and need to get back up North tonight :-(

Something about the bright flat colours makes those boats look very unreal - is it the flatness of the windows?

You convey the charm of Rock-a-Nore Road very well!

I was at the University of Kent at Canterbury. Canterbury
is beautiful but I prefer Faversham- just up the road- which is a secret place- a lovely small town that nobody's heard of.

Thanks. Yes the boats look like toys.

Agree on Faversham- a truly delightful place.

Keynes and Darwin.

Darwin opened while I was there and they asked for volunteers to move across to the new college- and I was one of them.

You were quite early then?

The new one's going to be Turing! :o)

I love Hastings. Nice for a rideout, too (though not straight down the A21 because that would be boring!).

I believe I must have gone up in '69.

Turing College- excellent!

We go up and down the A21 like a yo-yo.

We're just off the Kipping's Cross roundabout and Hastings is our nearest seaside town.

That'd be about right then as they're celebrating 50 years just now as is Christ Church down the hill, of which I'm also an alumna.

What glorious colour in the photos against the beautiful skies. Thunderstorms indeed!

The last photo is wonderful with the red boat and bright blue house. And the church...and cliffs. Full of lovely elements.

Thanks.

I take credit for the compositions but the colours and light were a gift.

These are some beautiful photographs. I love the colors of the paint against the sky.

Happy May Day!

Doesn't Hastings get overrun every October? Well, I suppose you and Ailz could go visit your daughter that weekend.

And so it goes throughout the country, ne? Towns of liberalism, surrounded by unremitting conservatism.

It is, of course, absolutely coincidental that existing parties greatly prefer maintaining an inherently geographically based system of electoral representation.

Particularly good photos, the third one especially - they genuinely capture the feeling of the area.

I certainly can't blame you for leaning toward Sussex! I'd never known the area until a couple jobs ago, which saw me move near Eastbourne - I took to the area readily. If I wanted a quiet night to recover from the day, I could just nestle down at home, or there was Brighton only a modest train ride away. And it was where I discovered my love for wildlife photography. ^_^
