I thought I saw a snowflake but perhaps it was a bird.

It must have been a very small bird.

Or very far away. Birds are a lot like snowflakes; they fly through the air....

With the greatest of ease? Perhaps it was a daring young man.

No. Because where could he have hung his trapeze?
