One of my favourite places in the world and I don't say that lightly. I could very happily retire to Ely ...I visit there at least twice a year.
And the Cathedral is indescribably lovely both inside and out.

This was only my second visit.

And the sun came out just when I needed it to.

You don't see hand carved stone buildings going up much anymore.

The Hindus are still putting them up. There's an incredibly elaborate white marble temple just down the road from where my daughter used to live in Leicester.

Now that you mention it we have one too. But I wonder whether they are hand carved stone, or made by computer controlled pneumatic robots.

Well I don't really know, but I like to think there are still craftsmen producing work in that tradition.

Ely Cathedral

I always connect Ely Cathedral with a really weird children's book I read when young. I've never been there.

I associate it with Tom's Midnight Garden- where the characters skate down the River Ouse to Ely.

I do love Ely. Will you be visiting any of the fenland churches with angels roofs?

Sadly not. We were only there briefly-on the way to somewhere else. Last night we were in Derbyshire. Tonight we'll be in Warrington.

How beautiful. It's so utterly different to the Wessex cathedrals and minsters - it might almost be in another country...

Wish I could get there one day!

Ely's unlike any other cathedral in the country- at least on the outside. Inside it's the usual winning combination of romanesque and gothic.

Wonderful picture! Amazing architecture and gentle spring mood, thanks to the azure sky.

Thanks.

The sun came out for about an hour- and it was (from my point of view) the right hour.
