Our leaders like to keep us frightened. It doesn't matter who or what we're scared of just so long as there's something- and they can present themselves as our defenders.

Right now they're going big on Isil. A few weeks ago it was the Russians in the Ukraine, but Isil is so satisfactorily monstrous that the Russians have been set aside and forgotten.  Is there still a war going on in the Ukraine? I suppose there must be, but I'm not seeing anything about it in the media, because- oooh, look- beheadings!

And now there's ebola. If more cases crop up in western countries we can probably foget about the jihadis.

Lurching from one bogeyman to the next makes it more likely that the public will collectively forget to focus on catastrophic failings, closer to home...

It'S been going on all the time. Fifty years ago, it was Reds putting fluoride in the drinking water to taint our precious bodily fluids.

You and I have similar views on what the political classes are getting up to, plainly.

Excuse me, but I think our cynicism's showing!

Bloody Reds!

Whatever happened to them, by the way?

Not cynicism, clear-sightedness.

Here in Texas ebola is definitely bigger news that ISIL. Some parents in Dallas are apparently afraid to send their children to a school where some of the pupils might have had contact with the person who was diagnosed with ebola last week... So there.

And yes, what happend to Ukraine?

I don't blame those parents. I think I might have done the same. You don't risk your children's lives.
