Moles

The moles have kept off our lawn all summer; now they're back. My mother would have called in the mole man but I'm willing to let the little buggers live. I just rake the molehills out or kick them over. I like moles better than lawns.

Moles are so cute, and lawns... Well, unless you have a specific need for one, I don't really see the point.

We have a lawn in our summer house garden - with lots of clover, labia and other great stuff growing in it so it's not a monoculture desert - but only because we need it for croquet and large al-fresco lunches. It's mowed as and when needed, though - which means that at present it hasn't been mowed since September 2013... When, I wonder, does it change status from "un-kempt lawn" to "charming meadow"?

I do, to. Cats are good. It creates a natural balance. We had some sort of burrowing animals at school... and coyotes that would hunt both them, and the OTHER burrowing animal, the rabbits. There are also hawks involved. I'm good with all of that, but some of the other students would just have a fit about it.

Moles are awesome.

A humane way of getting rid of the beggars is to put a little sprig of something prickly in the top of the molehill - Mole pricks his nose, freaks, and goes!

Something around here eats moles. I know because I found one lying dead on the path- freshly killed (I had probably frightened the killer away)- and the next time I passed it was gone. I imagine the predator was a fox, but I suppose it might have been a bird of prey.

I love how eco-systems work- and how they maintain a balance.

I don't believe I've ever seen a live one. I see their work and occasionally I come across a dead one, but mostly they stay underground.
