Breakdown

I've been looking at the map. Only Glasgow and Dundee voted for independence, Support for the Union was strongest in Orkney and the Borders. Edinburgh voted for the Union by a margin of 61.1% to 38.1%.

I heard that the Highlands and islands voted overwhelmingly for the Union, because the Lowlands were supposed to break heavily for independence, and the only people the Highlanders hate more than the English are the Lowlanders.

Yes, well, it's a mistake to suppose that Scotland is all one undivided nation.

I knew how Orkney and Shetland would go because I know the people pretty well after all these years.

Had it been a vote to return to Norway, things would have been very different indeed! :o)

The Borderers have their own culture too- and a history of trading and reiving that takes little account of national boundaries.

I have Scott ancestry- a right bunch of border reivers with a foot either side the border. I also have Cockburn ancestry- slightly more couthy lowlanders.

I'm English of Scottish ancestry and he's Scottish of English ancestry.

So many of us are.

I have no Scottish blood that I know of but my paternal grandfather's ancestry is a complete mystery (he liked it that way) so who knows?

I was surprised at how high the 'yes' vote was in the Northern Isles - everything I heard pointed to a much more anti-independence vote. For precisely the reasons you suggest...

I wasn't in the least surprised- they also voted a resounding 'no' to devolution and had to be bribed with an MSP each..........
