If

If the universe was a fire we'd be the little flames that flicker round the untouched wood. And if it were an ocean we'd be the spume at the outflung edges of the incoming tide.

And just as all the flames are one fire and all the waves one ocean so we are all of us particles of the one universe- and have lived at its heart and will return there.

If the universe was a fire, what would be the fuel?

It's a simile. Like all similes it'll only stretch so far before it snaps.

But it's a good question. Tantamount to asking what caused the Big Bang.

My theory is that two extra-dimensional universes ran into each other and our universe is what popped out. No telling where the first two came from though.

Exactly. Infinity and eternity are ungraspable concepts.

If the universe was an ocean, what would be the shore? And what makes the waves?

See above.
